Boorowa Central School sent an awesome team of cross country runners to the Western Area Trials held at Wellington on Wednesday 11 June. The team had a very successful day. Chris Turner competed first up on the day in the 16yrs race with his training paying off. He finished in ninth position – a creditable result in a fast field over six kilometres. The 14 year olds ran together. Elisabeth Banks ran at a consistent pace and looked good as she crossed the line also in ninth position after her four kilometre run. Then in a big field of over 40 runners Steven Babidge finished 19th and Patrick Beadman finished in 33rd position.
The 12 year old girls’ event saw Eliza Chudleigh finish in the middle of the pack while in the 13 year’s Beth Johnson finished 11th and Casey Corcoran finished in the middle after their three kilometre run.
In a big field of participants the 15 year’s event Daniel Anlezark finished in 14th place while Matthew Johnston and Dylan Poplin completed the four kilometre course and finished 25th and 26th respectively.
In the team’s best result of the day Gabriela Corcoran completed her four kilometre run and earned second place. Gabriela will now compete at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Trials where she will represent her school and Western Area on 25 July at Eastern Creek.
Gabriela has been training along with Chris Turner under the guidance of Brendon Shean one of the schools ex-students and former cross country representative. Gabriela’s technique is very effective and she had a great race strategy. Her second place is a just reward for all her hard work.
In the primary cross country event Helen Johnson also put in a creditable performance to come home in the middle of the pack. Well done Helen.
Accompanying teacher Alison King expressed that she was very pleased and proud of the team’s performance and sportsmanship during the day. All were excellently placed and represented Boorowa Central School well – yet again. The school would also like to thank Tammie Poplin and Gary Johnson for their continued support.
Boorowa Central was able to send a strong team to Western Trials after the fine results of the annual secondary cross country trials held when students ran a 5.3km course around Geraldine Lane and Ballyryan Road starting at the showground entrance. There were a lot of fine performances on this day. The highlight was Chris Turner’s performance. He was superbly paced by ex-student Brendon Shean. Both ran quickly finishing in 24.27 minutes. Year 9 student Daniel Anlezark finished in second place overall in 25.34 minutes. The first girl home was Gabriela Corcoran, with a time of 26.20 minutes.
The runners would like to sincerely thank Mr Blomfield for his time and excellent driving skills, transporting the students from school to and from the course. Additionally, they appreciated Ms Di Slingsby’s support and encouragement during the event.
