Central Schools Riverina Regional Touch gala day

5/06/2008 8:44:00 AM
Boorowa Central School hosted six other central schools from around the Riverina Region last week in a magnificent day of touch. Teams from Braidwood, The Rock, Coolamon, Quandialla, Ariah Park and Boorowa contested the U16 boys and girls touch to earn the right to play at the Central schools finals in august at Dubbo. The day was deemed a great success with each team being able to play a number of games and make for a far more enjoyable day. The Boorowa senior secondary students (Lexie Carney, Skye Ryan, Jelisa Blair, Alysha Johnston, Lucy Poplin, Emily Roberts, James Dunn, John Dunn, Rudy Corcoran, Chris Dwyer, Chris Turner, Sam Lynam-Carmody, Barry Kershaw and Andrew Hardefeldt) did a magnificent job again acting as officials, referees and scorers for the day and many teachers commented on their performance. The day would have not been a success without their input. Also thanks must go to the wonderful SRC and their band of workers who had the huge job of feeding all the players.

The two Boorowa U16 touch teams had a great day and some huge performances. The U16 boys’ teams led by Cameron and Murray had a huge day of touch and only narrowly missed out on going to the finals by ‘for and against’ points. The team of U16 boys; Cameron Johnston (Capt.), Murray Armour (Vice Capt) Mark Poplin, Daniel Anlezark, Dylan Poplin, Will McGuiness, Shane Archer, Brendan Dunn, Kurt Barton, Joshua Carmody and Nicholas Dwyer played four games to come away with two wins and two losses.

Fantastic to see was the improvement as the day went on and the confidence that many of the Boorowa lads gained as they played. Cameron and Murray really led well while some great combinations evolved. Cameron and Daniel worked well dazzling the opposition then Nick Dwyer put his ears back and scored a hat trick. One must remember all the work provided by the other team members in the lead up to all the trys. This is very young team and one which has huge potential for the future. Next year is looking good.

Coolamon and Braidwood go on to contest the finals in U16 boys.

Meanwhile the U16 Boorowa girls team led by Gabriela and Brooke displayed the biggest improvement overall. The team’s goal of the day was to just score a try and learn lots about the game of touch. This was a very young and inexperienced team of enthusiastic girls who really showed that with more touch days like this they will develop into an exciting team. The first game against Braidwood saw the girls; Gabriela Corcoran (Capt), Brooke Keefe (Vice Capt), Stacey Howard, Dannielle Carney, Casey Corcoran, Eliza Chudleigh, Tamara Randall, Beth Johnson, Katie Mason, Emmy-Lu Rufford-Sharpe, Jayne Lavis, Fon Daltrey, and Brooke Veness play really well for the first 20 minutes and then a little bit of inexperience resulted in Braidwood scoring. The second game again saw the girls play well in a very tight match going down one nil to Ariah Park.

After lunch the team really set the day alight with some very exciting touch being played. Many gained their confidence and played as a team, the passing of the ball along the line was impressive along with their defensive play. The girls were obviously the most improved on the day. Every player stood out and it would be difficult to single any individual out in the last two games. Well done girls.

Results: Boorowa 0 v Braidwood 2, Boorowa 0 V Ariah Park 1

Boorowa 6 V The Rock 2 (2 trys to Gabriela, one each to Eliza, Casey, Tamara and Dannielle)

Boorowa 7 V Quandialla 0 (2 trys to Gabriela and Beth, one try each to Jayne, Danielle and Eliza)

Congratulations to all the Boorowa students on their sportsmanship during the day. Many comments were received from visitors on the excellent organisation, canteen facilities and the way the students officiated. We look forward to next year. Coach Corcoran was very proud to be associated with all the players and officials. Special thanks also to Mrs Julie Poplin, Mel Ford and Mr Gary Small on their organisation in the Canteen.

In the open division which was to have been played on Wednesday Boorowa and Balranald Boys and Boorowa and Coolamon Girls advance to the finals. These finals will be played in Dubbo on Tuesday.
